Rule #1: Your wedding dress must be white
White became popular in 1840, after the marriage of Queen Victoria to Albert of Saxe-Coburg, where Victoria wore a white gown. Nearly 200 years later, we are still wearing white wedding dresses...now that’s what we call a trend setter! But what if you want to go off the beaten path and wear something different? Like a blush dress or a blue wedding dress? Then go right ahead, your wedding should be a reflection of your style. And so if a colourful wedding dress makes your heart sing, then that is what you should wear. Like this bride from our Real Wedding section who wore a blue wedding dress.

Rule #2: Your dress must be long
Most wedding dresses are long…but yours doesn’t have to be. What if you are going for a vintage look? Nothing says vintage more than a short, A-line dress reminiscent of the 60s. Or maybe you just want to rock a short, fun wedding dress.
We say…go right ahead!

Rule #3: Flowing, empire waist, chiffon dresses are for the bridesmaids not the bride
The silhouette of your dress should be pegged on certain things such as your body shape but not on what is the norm. Lacy, mermaid dresses might be in vogue right now but if you are planning a wedding at the Kenyan coast then a light, chiffon dress might be a better idea. The climate at the Kenyan coast is hot and humid, so you will be more comfortable in a light, breathable fabric such as chiffon. What’s dreamier than saying I do at the beach, against the background of crystalline waters, with your chiffon dress fluttering in the wind?

Rule # 4: Your dress and shoes should match in colour
Most brides wear shoes that are white or cream. But you really don’t have to! You can wear shoes in a bright colour to match your wedding colours or just to have a pop of colour playfully peeking out from underneath your dress. It is your wedding so let your personality shine through.

Rule #5: The bride, and only the bride, can wear white
This rule can be broken in a couple of instances; like if the bride decides to have her bridal party in white dresses. Then that is her prerogative. Or for a couple who specifically asks the guests to wear white. Like in this wedding we featured in our Real Wedding section.
If you, as the bride, would like your bridal party to wear white then ensure that the design of their dresses is not similar to yours.
You do not want to keep everyone guessing who the bride is.
